Cylinders, immersions and hot water systems explained

Hot water faults are far easier to resolve when the system type is understood first. Here is what is found in properties across the Fylde coast, and how each behaves when something fails.

Vented and unvented cylinders

Vented (open-vented) cylinders are fed by a cold storage tank in the loft and rely on gravity for pressure. They are common in older housing across Lytham St Anne's, Preston and the surrounding towns, and are typically identified by the tank in the loft and the vent pipe above the cylinder.
